Description
Spinel and diamond ring, circa 1925. Spinel is a superb and historically important gemstone, often found alongside its more famous rivals ruby and sapphire, and as a consequence, were often mistaken for them until the 18th century, when advances in mineralogy led to their recognition as distinct stones. This spinel owes its striking teal colour to traces of cobalt. While cobalt was commonly added to synthetic spinels in the early 20th century, natural cobalt spinels such as this are extremely rare, with more complex shades of blue, making them highly sought-after as a result. Set within a border of brilliant-cut diamonds, this mysterious blue stone makes an intriguing and interesting alternative to the classic sapphire and diamond cluster ring.
