Victorian Diamond Five Stone Engagement Ring, 18ct Yellow Gold

Victorian Diamond Navette Panel Ring, 18ct Yellow Gold

Rings in this distinctive design are known as ‘navette’ rings – literally meaning ‘little boat’, from the shape of their settings. Popular from the 18th century onwards, they were prized for their elongating effect on the hand of the wearer. This navette ring is pavé set with a glittering array of antique cushion-shaped diamonds and an outer border of rose-cut diamonds. Its 19thcentury date is revealed by the hand-pierced gallery along the edge of the gold and silver mount, and the superb pierced setting at the back of each diamond – a mark of superior quality and the excellent workmanship that gave jewels of this age an unprecedented lightness and delicacy. Antique Diamond Ring, Platinum, Circa 1900

This extremely impressive ring links two differing aesthetics in a thrilling and unusual design. The front is of strongly geometric form, centring on a rectangular panel of pavé-set circular cut diamonds, within a diamond frame that arches to meet at a point in the centre. However, this boldly geometric Art Deco jewel is embellished with many delicate details which seem to hark to an earlier and more ornate aesthetic, including a daintily millegrained border to the platinum, and shoulders and gallery intricately pierced and millegrained with an openwork design of floral scrolls. A true rarity, with each millimetre lavished with attention, demonstrating superb craftsmanship. Please view the technical details below. French, Art Deco 4ct Diamond Bombé Dress Ring, Platinum

A magnificent Art Deco diamond bombé ring. Art Deco designs of the late 1930s started to move away from the intricate geometric forms of the previous decade, and took their inspiration from machinery and architectural forms. Reminiscent of French designers such as Suzanne Belperron and her former employer René Boivin, this ring is a perfect example of this new era, and still appears thrillingly modern – a domed bombé design, set with bands of Old European and carré-cut diamonds, within an outer border of polished platinum. An immensely stylish and very glamorous addition to anyone’s jewellery collection – perfect as a cocktail ring, his diamond marvel is likely to steal the show, but durable enough for everyday wear. About diamonds

Explore our collection of Antique and Vintage Diamond Rings and Jewellery, including Old-Cut Diamond Engagement and Dress Rings. With a long history of desire and allure, diamonds have held on to their title as the most precious gemstone of them all.

Why are we fascinated by diamonds?

The hardest material known to man, diamond gets its name from the Greek ‘adamas’, meaning 'unconquerable'.

A cubic crystal form of pure carbon, diamond’s combination of hardness, characteristically bright ‘adamantine’ lustre and high dispersion or ‘fire’ have captured our imaginations for millennia.

The earliest recorded sources of diamonds were from India, found glittering at the bottom of river beds. These stones, known as ‘Golconda’ diamonds after the Indian city of Golconda where they were traded, were famed for their whiteness and purity, and some of the world’s most famous and historic examples, such as the Koh-I-Noor in the Queen Mother's Crown, can be traced to these distant origins.

By the mid 1700s, similar riverbed deposits of diamonds were being found in Brazil, but it wasn’t until the 1867 discovery of the 21.25 carat ‘Eureka’ diamond on a farm in South Africa that these rare gems were actually mined. These South African deposits revolutionised the worldwide jewellery industry and yielded some of the most important diamonds ever discovered, such as the Star of Africa, and the record-breaking 3106.75 carat Cullinan diamond, later re-cut into a number of stones in the British Crown Jewels.

Today, though no longer the sole preserve of royals and aristocrats, diamonds still enjoy their place as the most valuable and prestigious gemstone, and are the only stones with a standardised and dedicated grading system. Due to their beauty and incredible durability, diamonds make an excellent choice for any jewel, whether as a principal or accent stone.
