Provenance
Original to c.1890, this incredible late Victorian carved half-hoop is truly spectacular. From the quality of the old-cut diamonds to the intricate detail of the ornately carved gallery, this ring is the definition of an heirloom piece.
Set to centre with a large round old-cut diamond. Round old-cut diamonds are a historic diamond cut that emerged at the end of the 19th century. They were a result of two revolutionary events in the history of diamond cutting; the invention of the bruting machine which allowed diamonds to be cut in the round, and the discovery of the South African deposits. Diamonds were more plentiful than ever before and could be cut with symmetry and precision that was not previously possible.
The central diamond is flanked by two further round old-cut diamonds, to another pair of much smaller diamonds at each end - all have been carefully graduated in size to offer a flattering and harmonious balance of stones across the finger. Each diamond was cut by-hand well over a hundred years ago, as such they have the charming character and sparkles that antique diamonds are known and loved for.
The diamonds are all claw-set and interspersed by tiny rose-cut diamonds which add a soft and romantic finesse to an already perfect piece! The gallery of the ring is sublime. Masterfully carved into rich 18ct yellow gold, the gallery is formed by scrolling motifs and stylised acanthus leafs.
The two outermost diamonds lead to the shoulders of the ring, which features such wonderfully done carved detail. The carved gallery seems to naturally scroll into the shoulders with such elegance that it feels as though it were formed by real life vines.
The scroll work gives way to a solid D-shape shank. This ring is an absolute dream of a ring and would make for the perfect engagement ring - as classy and elegant today as it was two centuries ago when it was first made.
