Provenance
Original to c.1910, this Edwardian cluster ring features the most incredible collection of cushion shaped old-mine cut diamonds. The old-mine cut is one of the earliest diamond cuts and these stones hail from the historic mines of India or Brazil, the first known diamond deposits. The beauty of old-mine diamonds is that no two are ever identical. Cut under daylight or candlelight, each diamond has its own character and charm and their broad chunky facets and soft romantic glow make these antique stones impossible to replicate today.
At the centre of the ring, three cushion old-mine cut diamonds are held in rub-over settings with delicate millegrain edging. The combined weight of the three central diamonds is 0.92ct, with the largest stone in the middle, flanked by two smaller stones. Surrounded by a triple cluster of smaller cushion old-mine diamonds each with its own unique proportions and facet arrangements - each has its own twinkle, catching the light beautifully.
The diamonds differ subtly in colour, which would be considered anathema today, however this is one of the rings most charming features. Some are bright white, others faintly yellow tinted and others slightly pink and brown. Everything about this ring is authentically handcrafted and quintessentially antique.
The surrounding diamonds are grain set in platinum and surrounded by a millegrain border. The gallery is open with linear structure and conforms nicely to the curvature of the finger, its profile is very low making it super comfortable and practical to wear. The shoulders are solid and seamlessly flow into a solid 18ct yellow gold band.
