Russian, Early 20th Century, Ruby and Diamond Target Ring

SKU: ARB-561

Ruby and Diamond Ring, circa 1920. Target rings are so-called for their concentric layers of coloured stones, looking like an archery target or a dartboard. This attractive design was made possible by innovations in stone cutting at the beginning of the 20th century. Gradually jewellers were able to cut stones to fit the design of the jewel, rather than having to design the jewel around pre-existing cut stones. The result is intricately set calibré-cut stones such as the rubies in this ring, which are set seamlessly together to create a unified band of colour around the central stone. With an antique circular-cut diamond at its heart and a geometric millegrain outer border of smaller diamonds, this elegant ring is a timeless classic of early 20th century jewellery design, which still works beautifully as a modern engagement ring.
