Provenance
Made in 1891, this gorgeous Victorian cluster ring is the perfect antique engagement ring. Set to centre with a round natural blue sapphire with a vibrant and intense cobalt blue colour. Although small, its definitely striking and is set with gold claws in an unusual and slightly raised star-setting. Surrounded by a cluster of old mine-cut diamonds, nine in total with one later replacement diamond which is a transitional-cut, likely set in the 1930s.
We love this tiny little detail and, although completely unapparent to the untrained eye, its a charming little mark of the life this ring has already lived and the love stories it has already fulfilled.
The cushion shaped old mine-cut is one of the earliest diamond cuts and these stones were completely cut by hand under daylight or candlelight. As such, no two are ever identical and each has its own unique sparkle and character. They catch the light much differently to modern laser-cut diamonds and as a result they emit a softer and more romantic glow.
The diamonds are claw-set above an intricately pierced gallery and framed by the most gorgeous shoulders you could imagine! The shoulders are ornately carved as foliate style leafs, replete with hand-engraved scrolling motifs which then lead into a solid 18ct yellow gold D-shape shank.
Quintessentially Victorian and irresistibly charming - this is a very special ring, perfect for a very special love-story.
