Provenance
Originating from the United Kingdom, this piece dates to Circa 1920's, the Art Deco era. Set to centre with a round old-cut diamond coming in at just over 1.60ct. The stone's symmetry is near-flawless and its clarity is exceptional, I would estimate VVS2. Set in an open backed illusion setting - a technique originating from Paris in the late 19th century that gives the illusion of a larger stone. The central diamond is surrounded by eight trillion cut blue sapphires, perfectly matched in colour and in rub-over settings with delicate millegrain edging detail. Set within a circular frame of intricate openwork forming a lotus-flower motif that separates each sapphire. The shoulders are slightly raised and are decorated with Egyptian style reed motifs bordered by tiny platinum granules (millegrain edging). Shoulders taper to a solid platinum shank.
The source of inspiration for this ring is clear. During the 1920's Epypto-mania swept across the West following the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. Motifs derived from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and striking colour contrasts were combined with the geometric aesthetics of the Art Deco movement to create Egyptian revival jewels such as this one.
