Provenance

Original to c.1880, this emerald and diamond five-stone carved half-hoop ring is absolutely breathtaking. Set to centre with a natural emerald with an incredibly vibrant and luscious tropical green hue. Claw-set in an open-back setting and flanked by two cushion shape old-mine diamonds that compliment the central stone beautifully. Further set with two more natural emeralds, slightly smaller than the centre stone and each with slightly different proportions which is especially charming.

These emeralds come from the old mines of Colombia - the origin of the world's finest emeralds. Colombian emeralds are characterised by their highly saturated colour and high clarity - even today, with many new deposits all over the world, Colombian emeralds continue to be the standard by which every other stone is judged. Emeralds are naturally very included gemstones. Known poetically as jardin (French for 'garden'), delicate moss-like feathers drift through each stone - not as flaws, but as fingerprints. For this reason, no two emeralds will ever be the same, each has its own unique character.

These emeralds all have an exceptional colour and upon close inspection you can see subtle variations in the hue and tone of each stone. All stones claw-set in open-back settings, the gallery is intricately carved with scrolling scalloped detail which is typically seen in Victorian rings of this style.

Victorian five-stone rings of such high quality as this one are hard to come by - most will have been broken up in the following century to be re-set into more contemporary jewels. This jewel is a truly exceptional example of Victorian craftsmanship and would be an excellent heirloom piece.
