Victorian Era Ring Designs
Victorian ring designs and styles were heavily influenced by three hallmark periods within Queen Victoria’s life. Jewellery from the ‘Romantic’ period was designed to reflect the monarch's love for her husband. Jewellery from the 'Grand' period symbolised grief, as the monarch mourned the death of her husband. Finally, the ‘Aesthetic’ period saw jewellery styled to reflect the monarch’s enthusiasm for the future.
In our collection of Victorian antique rings, you'll find intricate and distinctive ring designs that reflect those period trends. Discover the distinctive details and styles of our rings' various periods on the 'About Periods’ page.

The Victorian Period (1837-1901) spanned the sixty-four-year reign of Britain's beloved queen, Victoria. It occurred between the Georgian and Edwardian eras, which to date would classify Victorian rings as antique as opposed to vintage.
Victorian jewellery incorporated the use of many romantic motifs, some of which alluded to the monarchy. Hearts, hands, eyes, flowers, crowns and love knots are some of the most popular motifs and are definitive of this era of design. Enamel work was also a popular feature at this time as well as intricate metal work and detailed shoulders. Victorian rings are often opulent and highly ornamental, they can sometimes be classified using hallmarks, however, at the time it was not common practice to mark jewellery.
The Victorian Era was a golden age for jewellery making and was inspired by the monarch's regal aesthetic. It made great use of impressive gemstones, ornate settings and pristine metals. At its roots, this style was inspired by the end of the industrial revolution as well as the globalisation that caused the spread of the French ‘Rococo’ style. This originated in France, after King Louis XIV expressed a desire for a more playful and colourful art form to replace the heavily religious themes that were prominent in the art world at the time.
