Provenance
Original to c.1880, this Victorian ring features a stunning spread of natural turquoises which are pleasingly graduated in size to offer such a flattering look on the hand! Turquoise was a popular gemstone during the Georgian and Victorian eras and was prized for its bright blue hue and soft lustre.
Throughout the Victorian period, turquoise was often seen in mourning jewels to commemorate lost loved ones, however, this isn't the case here. This is an example of a carved half-hoop ring which were hugely popular during the late 1800s. The carved half-hoop is characterised by its ornate gallery with scrolling motifs carved into rich yellow gold. They are most often seen as three-stones or five-stones like this ring here.
Most turquoise came from what was then called Persia (modern day Iran) and to have five stones so perfectly matched in colour is remarkable. Many natural turquoises have notable green undertones but these cabochons all exhibit a strikingly pure and vibrant blue colour.
Oval cut and graduated in size, claw-set in open-back settings above an incredibly ornate and grand gallery featuring carved scrollwork typical of the period. The shoulders drop down to a solid 18ct yellow gold shank.
