Provenance
Original to c.1900, this incredible Belle Époque cluster ring has the most remarkable natural Colombian emerald set to centre. The cluster takes an unusual rounded cushion-shaped outline and features twenty old-mine cut diamonds mounted in cut-down silver settings.
The emerald originates from the old mines of Colombia, famed for producing the world's finest emeralds both historically and to this very day. Weighing 2.70ct this emerald displays incredible clarity - a rarity for an emerald of this size. Its colour is a fresh, vibrant spring-green, enlivened by cool minty undertones. Cut entirely by hand, the stone’s deep cushion proportions invite the eye inward. My favourite thing about this emerald is that from a certain angle flashes subtle flashes of a verdant bordering on lime-green colour can be seen deep within the emerald’s depth.
The emerald is in an 18ct yellow-gold rub-over setting with polished edges and subtle millegrain detail, a perfect setting for ensuring the safety, security and protection of the stone. Encircled by twenty cushion-shape old-mine cut diamonds, each of which has its own sparkle and charming character. The beauty of old-mine cut diamonds is that no two are ever the same, their broad chunky facets and soft romantic glow make these antique stones impossible to replicate today.
The diamonds are set in silver cut-down settings - a quintessentially antique technique most commonly seen in Georgian era jewels. In this technique, the silver is carefully worked around the stone, with small sections cut down and pushed over the edges of the diamonds to secure them in place. Rather than the heavy claws seen in modern rings, the traditional cut-down setting is beautiful and delicate whilst also allowing the ring to maintain a low, practical and protective profile. The gallery is executed in 18ct yellow gold and is intricately pierced with a needle-like pattern. This fine openwork allows light to gently filter through, lingering beneath the emerald and enhancing its natural glow, as though illuminated from within.
True to antique craftsmanship, the ring’s entire profile sits low on the finger, carefully conforming to the curvature of the finger. Despite its large, impressive size the ring feels unbelievably comfortable to wear, laying low and smooth against the skin. The shoulders are subtle and seamlessly taper to a solid 18ct yellow gold band.
