Austrian Emerald and Diamond Cluster Ring, 14ct White Gold

The central stone in this ring is a very unusual shade for an emerald. It presents rich teal undertones, that flatter both the white gold setting and accenting diamonds. The diamonds that encircle the emerald amount to an estimated total weight of 0.50ct, and are set to hug the emerald, complementing its unique spectrum of colour. Circa 1960, this vintage ring would make a wonderful choice for an engagement. • Columbian-Edwardian-Platinum-Diamond-Cluster-Ring-Antique-Jewellery

Edwardian, Platinum, Colombian Emerald and Diamond Cluster Ring

This cluster ring is set with a Colombian emerald of excellent clarity and colour, in a characterful antique octagonal step-cut, with a soft oval outline. Colombian emeralds are the most highly prized of all emerald varieties as they are formed differently in the earth’s mantle to other emeralds, which gives them a distinct richness of colour and a plethora of characteristic inclusions, which are often referred to as the emerald’s ‘garden’. This rich green emerald sits in the centre of a Belle Epoque cluster ring, sparkling with antique circular-cut diamonds in a delicately stippled ‘millegrain’ border. Sitting comfortably low on the hand, with claws protecting the emerald, this supremely attractive jewel would make an excellent choice for an engagement ring. Please view the technical details below. • Georgian-18-Carat-Gold-Silver-Emerald-Diamond-Ring-Antique

Georgian, 18ct Gold, Silver, Emerald and Diamond Ring

The settings of the diamonds in this antique ring are indicative of an early 19th century date, when jewels were mounted in silver on gold, and stones were set in large collets which were then pinched together and cut down to fit the edges of the stone to hold it in place. The patination of the silver offsets the diamonds in this ring beautifully, which surround a step-cut emerald in a beautiful, summery shade of bright bluish-green. A beautiful and very wearable example of this historic style. Please view the technical details below. • Antique-Emerald-Diamond-Art-Nouveau-Jewellery-Ring

Art Nouveau, 18ct Gold, Emerald and Diamond Ring

The elongated shape of this ring has its origins in the 18th century boat-shaped ‘navette’ rings of the 18th century. This version, with its curving, leaf-like contours, is clearly informed by Art Nouveau, a turn-of-the-century movement characterised by aesthetically stylised naturalism, and sinuous, dramatic lines. The unusual cuts of the outer emeralds are a particularly rare feature. The outer emeralds are extraordinary as they slightly curve to fit the contours of the ring’s outline - a difficult and expensive feat for a lapidary to accomplish with any gemstone. To finish it off, a line of beautifully matched circular-cut diamonds down the centre, bordered by four marquise-shaped emeralds, paired like newly sprouted leaves, some smaller diamond accents and a delicate millegrain border. This is a miniature masterpiece, it is romantic and unique making it a wonderful choice for an antique engagement ring. Please view the technical details below. About emeralds

What is an emerald?Alongside rubies and sapphires, emeralds complete the triumvirate of precious stones.

They are also some of the most historically treasured gemstones, and emerald mining is documented as far back as 1500 BCE, supposedly on mount Smaragdus in Egypt.

Emeralds are a variety of the mineral beryl (which also includes aquamarine, morganite and heliodor), and owe their extraordinary green to chromium impurities.

The most famous sources of emeralds are found in Colombia, with the Muzo and Chivor mines producing particularly important examples. Today, Colombia is still the world's main source of gem quality emeralds, but increasingly mines in Zambia and Pakistan are producing excellent examples.

Due to their chemistry and the way they are formed, emeralds are very rarely without inclusions, and enjoy an enviable position among precious stones in having their inclusions not only accepted, but celebrated.

These various combinations of inclusions, often known as an emerald's 'jardin', can reveal the minutiae of the emerald's formation in the earth and occasionally its precise geographical origin. Due to these inclusions, emeralds are often traditionally treated with oil, which absorbs into fissures within the stone and helps to keep the stone at its most transparent.

Emerald is the birthstone of the month of may, and is associated with the star sign cancer. At 7-8 on the Moh's scale of hardness, emeralds are quite hard, but can be brittle due to their structure, meaning that protective settings are important for everyday wear.
