Provenance
Original to c.1912, this Edwardian sapphire and diamond five-stone ring is set with three natural blue sapphires, each of which subtly has its own hue and tone, a detail only apparent upon close inspection. The central sapphire is larger than the others and has an extremely unusual colour; part cerulean blue, part teal, part sea-foam green - the colours appear to dance within the stone as its turned under light. The two smaller sapphires set adjacent to the shoulders; one has a slightly muted cornflower-blue colour and the other a brighter pale-periwinkle tone.
The central sapphire is flanked by two cushion shape old-mine cut diamonds. The old-mine cut is one of the earliest diamond cuts. Sourced from the historic mines of India or Brazil, these diamonds were completely cut by hand under daylight or dim candlelight and the are prized for their romantic, soft glow as opposed to the harsh scintillation of modern laser cut diamonds.
The stones have been thoughtfully graduated in size, offering a well proportioned and flattering spread across the finger. The sapphires and diamonds are both claw-set in an open-back setting, featuring ridged and carved scallop detail which has a lovely decorative effect without being too ornate to distract from the gemstones themselves. The ring sits nice and low in profile, making it comfortable and practical to wear - this ring would be the perfect engagement ring or perhaps an alternative to an eternity ring, which can be loved and worn everyday!
