Provenance

Original to c.1915, this ruby and diamond five-stone ring is impossible to not fall in love with. It strikes the perfect balance between subtle and stunning. Set with three natural Burmese rubies with a combined weight of 0.48ct.My favourite thing about these stones is their individuality, rather than perfectly matching, each ruby has its own colour and character. The central stone glows with a vibrant raspberry red, another has a softer grape-toned hue and the third displays a deeper, more intense crimson.

Flanking the central ruby, two cushion-shape old-mine cut diamonds. Distinguished by their broad, chunky facets, deep proportions and soft cushion outlines, old-mine cut diamonds are loved for their romantic glow as opposed to the sharper scintillation of modern laser-cut stones. All gemstones are set in platinum rub-over settings, finished with fine millegrain edge detail. The gallery features intricately pierced scalloped design which compliments the rounded outline of each gemstone. With a pleasing spread across the finger and a low profile, this ring is as comfortable to wear as it is captivating. The shoulders are solid and lead straight into a solid 18ct yellow gold band.

Inside the band lie small traces of the ring’s storied past. Engraved in elegant italic script are the initials 'M.D.F' and 'W.B', followed by the charming and rather unexpected inscription, 'X’mas 1920'. It’s easy to think of "Xmas" as a modern word, used only in fleeting text messages and marketing campaigns - yet seeing it engraved over a century ago is a funny but also poignant reminder that we haven’t changed nearly as much as we might imagine. In that small inscription, the past feels unexpectedly close; a quiet echo of the same sentiments, the same habits and the same expressions of love that continue today.
