Provenance
Original to c.1910, this ring is beyond elegant. Made in France during the Belle Époque era, which was contemporaneous with the Edwardian period in the UK, this ring is an exceptional testament to the unmatched craftsmanship of the early 20th century.
Set with a natural saltwater pearl with the perfect creamy-white lustre with subtle cream undertones and round button shape - the most desirable of all. Natural pearls are incredibly scare and hugely valuable - during the Edwardian era they were seen as the most desirable engagement ring choice due to how rare they were. This particular pearl is of outstanding quality.
Today, natural pearls are seldom found with nearly all oysters no longer being able to produce these miraculous gems. 99% of pearls on the market today are cultured and it is only in antique pieces that natural saltwater pearls tend to be found.
The pearl is in an open-back setting on a platinum band which is half-set with cushion shaped old mine-cut diamonds which have a characteristic warmth and soft glow due to their hand-cut nature. No two old mine diamonds are ever identical and their broad, irregular arrangement of chunky facets give them the distinctly antique character for which they are so widely loved for. The diamonds are grain-set and bordered by millegrain edging, they form the shoulders of the ring which then stops at a pointed ridge to flow into a platinum band with decorative fluting that continues around the band.
Despite being made well over a century ago, there is something so strikingly timeless and contemporary feeling about its design. Understated yet refined, simple yet effortlessly stunning - this ring is a truly gorgeous piece.
