Provenance
Original to c.1920, this peridot and diamond ring is such a gem. Set with a natural peridot with an impressive weight of 4ct. This stone has such a fresh and vibrant hue to it, a lime-green with more subtle pear-green undertones. Excellent clarity especially for such a large natural gemstone. Its certainly a very fun pop of colour in an otherwise traditional setting, which is what makes this ring so fun!
Rub-over set in 18ct yellow gold with fine millegrain edging, to a solid gold collet with a platinum gallery below with an intricate pierced open-work design that resembles an architectural arcade of arches. The shoulders are trumpeting and flank the peridot on either side, they are each set with two round old-cut diamonds, four in total with a combined weight of 0.15ct. Grain-set in platinum and surrounded by a millegrain edge border.
The shoulders are open with chenier details, taper elegantly to a solid platinum D-shape shank. Crafted in the early 1920s, this ring captures a pivotal moment in design history, when the soft intricacies of the Edwardian era were beginning to give way to the clean symmetry and structure of the emerging Art Deco movement. Its gallery has an architectural quality; balanced, linear, refined and hinting at the bold geometry that would soon define the decade ahead.
Peridot was a much-loved gemstone of the Edwardian period, yet Edwardian rings were typically crafted in gold with platinum reserved only for the setting. Here, the opposite is true. The use of solid platinum throughout reflects a growing spirit of experimentation among jewellers of the time, both in materials and design. Poised beautifully between two great design eras, this ring is a remarkable reflection of a changing age.
