Provenance
Dating to circa 1925, this extraordinary Art Deco sapphire and diamond ring is unlike anything else in the collection. At its centre sits a magnificent oval cabochon sapphire of approximately 6ct, its velvety cornflower-blue hue is entirely natural and un-enhanced. Known as a sugar-loaf cabochon, it is rub-over set in an open-back mount.
Surrounded by twelve cushion old mine-cut diamonds each with its own charming and quirky proportions which means they sparkle in the light in a way no other diamonds can. Entirely cut by hand, these diamonds are prized for their warm and romantic glow and old-world character.
Further diamonds are set on either shoulder, lending a total diamond weight of approximately 1ct. Beneath, an exquisitely pierced openwork gallery reveals the refined craftsmanship synonymous with the period. Crafted in platinum, with German origins, circa 1925.
Why I love this ring
This sapphire rises like a little blue mountain - proud, luminous, impossible to ignore. The colour is utterly intoxicating: that dream-like Sri Lankan cornflower blue paired with the delightful brilliance of old mine-cut diamonds and cool platinum. I bought it instantly because pieces like this simply do not appear anymore. It has all the drama of a classic sapphire cluster ring, but with a sculptural, architectural elegance that makes it feel entirely its own. Sophisticated, striking and totally unique. - Sam.
