Provenance
Original to c.1920, this Art Deco ruby and diamond cluster ring is a wonderful example of a target ring, which was a specific style of cluster ring which was popularised in the 1920s! The target ring gets its name from its resemblance to a dartboard and is characterised by a central coloured gemstone or diamond, surrounded by two haloes of diamonds in a symmetrical arrangement.
We love that this ring has an octagonal outline which gives it a certain edge that makes it totally unique and utterly charming! Set to centre with a natural ruby which such a striking red tone that can be hard to come by especially in natural unheated stones such as this one here. A lot of rubies can possess strong pink undertones yet this stone has a vibrant and punchy red hue which is rather unforgettable! Rub-over set with millegrain detail and encircled by two rings of old-cut diamonds which have been expertly matched in colour and clarity. The octagonal outline of the ring chimes perfectly with the geometric ideals of the Art Deco movement which swept across Europe and the States in 1925.
The 1920s gave birth to the cocktail ring, large over-sized statement pieces which were typically worn on the right hand as symbols of empowerment and liberation that post-war society had given women. They reflect the widespread optimism and celebration that defined the Roaring Twenties!
The gallery is a work of miniature art and is carved with scrolling motifs and curling tendrils which add such a special and highly intimate aspect to the ring -a detail to be enjoyed by the wearer and the wearer alone! The shoulders are solid and flow to a solid D-shape platinum shank. I love how low in profile the ring sits on the finger - this tends to be a hallmark of antique rings and makes them so comfortable and practical to wear.
