Provenance
This ring was made in 1960s France but in the style of Art Nouveau - a movement that swept across Europe at the turn of the 20th century. The movement was short lived, however the jewels that were created during this period are remembered as some of the most beautiful ever made.
This Art Nouveau style ring takes the form of a sinuous cross-over ring that wraps around the finger like the delicate stem of a vine. Nature was one of the key sources of inspiration for jewellers of the Art Nouveau and expressing it in its truest form was at the heart of their ethos. Asymmetrical yet balanced compositions such as this one were popular and fluid, sinuous lines known as "the whiplash" were an essential feature of Art Nouveau jewels.
This ring is set with transitional-cut diamonds, which were the last of the hand-facetted diamonds. They emerged in the late 1930s and remained popular until laser-cut round brilliants became the de facto diamond cut. The larger diamond is claw-set and from it a sinuous line tapers and flows into the 18ct yellow gold band, set with diamonds grain-set with polished edge borders. Adorned further with several stylised leaf motifs. As the yellow gold band wraps around the finger it terminates with a diamond-set scroll.
This is such an elegant and delicate design that is unmistakably Art Nouveau!
