Provenance
Original to to c.1910, this Edwardian solitaire ring is set to centre with a synthetic colour-change sapphire. Cushion-cut, and displaying a striking colour change from a bluish-green in daylight to a rich purple in warmer incandescent light. This gemstone was made by the Verneuil Flame Fusion (VFF) process which was producing commercial synthetic sapphires as early as 1902.
Colour change sapphires such as this one were purposefully made to be sold as Alexandrite simulants, the colour-change variety of Chrysoberyl. Due to its synthetic origin, this sapphire is free of any natural inclusions, allowing its colour-change phenomenon to be made even more notable. Claw-set in an open-back setting above an intricately pierced gallery.
The profile sits comfortably low on the finger. Solid shoulders which seamlessly flow to a solid 15ct yellow gold band.
