Provenance

Made in Austria during the Belle Époque Era, probably c.1905-1910, this sapphire, pearl and old-mine cut diamond cluster ring is simply stunning. Bombé shaped with a generous spread across the finger, this ring would make for a perfect cocktail ring. Set to centre with a natural sapphire with an inky midnight blue colour, rub-over set in platinum finished with delicate millegrain edge detail. To a cluster design; the sapphire is encircled by a larger oval grain-set with chunky old-mine cut diamonds. With their broad, chunky facets and charming cushion-shaped outline, each diamond has its own character and sparkle. The contrast between the sapphire's deep twilight hue and the bright glow produced by the surrounding diamonds reminds me of stars twinkling against a clear night sky.

Flanking the central oval are two round pearls with a silvery-grey body colour and a high lustre with pinkish undertones. Each pearl sits at the centre of a trefoil cluster formed by three further old-mine cut diamonds, claw-set and slightly raised to provide protection for the pearls.

The ring continues to gently taper to form the shoulders, further set with more cushion-shape old-mine cut diamonds, perfectly matched in colour and clarity. Interspersed by platinum granules which have a refined decorative effect. Bordered by polished edges that offer a streamline and sleek effect. The gallery is low and conforms to the curvature of the finger, with openwork separated by fine chenier details. The shoulders seamlessly flow to a solid 18ct white gold D-shape shank.

This ring is an exceptional example of the elegance, delicacy and air of lightness that characterised jewellery made during this period and is just as beautiful today as it was when it was crafted over a century ago.
