Due to the construction of rings that are closed-back, or foil-back, water can sometimes become trapped and encased at the back of gemstones. Over time this can cause the gem surface or foil backing to fade, and this can only be resolved by a jeweller. Remove any foiled-back jewellery before washing your hands, or bathing.

If gemstones are mounted in closed-back for settings that are lined in foil, immersing them in water will damage and flake the foiling and the gems will appear dark and dull, instead wipe the stones with a soft, lint free cloth to remove any residue build up. Try to prevent your jewellery from coming into close contact with perfume, makeup or oil by putting it on last.
