To find out more about the gemstones in this ring:
Provenance
Original to c.1950, this yellow sapphire cocktail ring feels like wearing sunshine on your finger. Set with a natural, unheated yellow sapphire from the old mines of Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka), the origin of the world’s finest yellow sapphires. Approximately 8ct, the stone is all the more remarkable for its exceptional clarity which is rare to see in gemstones of this size. While natural inclusions are found in all natural gemstones, serving as quiet indicators of their origin, this sapphire is notably free of any eye-visible distractions.
It has a wonderful sunflower-yellow hue which is made all the more vivid by the depth of its cut. Trace impurities of iron within the crystal lattice are what lend the sapphire its golden warmth, yet to encounter an unheated stone of this saturation is a true rarity. The sapphire’s radiance is accentuated by the yellow gold gypsy-style ring it is set in, with the rub-over setting quietly drawing attention to the gem’s gorgeous cushion outline. The sapphire sits in-flush with the band making it extremely comfortable and practical to wear while the gold feels smooth to the touch - a true joy to wear.
This ring bears hallmarks for Austria. The 1950s was a decade that saw Austria transition from post-war occupation (divided among the U.S., USSR, UK, and France) into an independent neutral state. While this was a period of recovery from total wartime devastation, it was also a time of new-found hope, rapid growth and stability. I like to think that this ring perfectly reflects the fresh optimism of the era. A ring guaranteed to brighten up your day!
