Provenance
Made in the 1960s, this masterpiece of a ring is set with one of the richest emeralds we have ever seen. Octagon-cut, the colour of this stone is so intense and vivid its hard to believe nature alone could produce such a colour. This emerald hails from the Brazilian mines, and would have been among the first Brazilian emeralds to enter the international market.
Flanked by two round transitional-cut diamonds with a combined weight of 0.80ct. The transitional-cut is the last of the hand-facetted diamond cuts and the direct precursor of the modern round-brilliant - these diamonds have the proportions and symmetry required for the most brilliant sparkle and fire.
The emerald and diamonds are all claw-set in open-back settings to an intricate and unusual platinum gallery which is pierced with a geometric criss-cross design and tapers inwardly. The geometric details recall the clean-cut symmetry of the Art Deco movement. During the 60s, jewellers frequently made jewels in the style of earlier eras, particularly Art Deco. The shoulders are lightly raised and feature delicate chenier details, flowing to a solid 18ct yellow gold shank.
