Provenance
Original to c.1935, this late Art Deco cluster ring is such an interesting and unusual piece. It combines a number of different design styles to make a ring that is as beautiful as it is unique. Set to centre with a round transitional-cut diamond which has been grain-set in an open-back setting.
Although lesser known than other diamond cuts, the transitional-cut marked a defining moment in the history of diamond cutting. It emerged in the late Art Deco period and is recognised as the direct predecessor of the modern round brilliant cut. Improved cutting precision and evolving gemmological expertise gave these diamonds greater symmetry, brilliance, and light performance. They can be recognised by their tiny culet, large table and lower crown when compared to an old-cut diamond. Still faceted by hand, the transitional-cut is the last of the hand-cut diamonds.
The diamond is framed by a square border with an engraved ridge that sharpens and accentuates its crisp, clean lines. Flowing into a cluster design reminiscent of a bombe ring with its rounded outline.
The shoulders are the true highlight: elegantly tapered and intricately carved with scrolling fleur-de-lis motifs framed by a wreath-like border. To a solid 18ct white gold shank that comfortably conforms to the finger. This ring is beautifully proportioned and would make for a perfect engagement ring for an Art Deco lover.
