Provenance
Original to c.1890, this incredible late Victorian five-stone is one of the finest examples we've ever come across. From the quality of the old-cut diamonds to the intricate detail of the ornately carved gallery, this ring truly does have it all!
Set to centre with a large round old-cut diamond with an approximate weight of 1.25ct and incredible symmetry despite its hand-cut nature. Round old-cut diamonds are a historic diamond cut that emerged at the end of the 19th century. They were a result of two revolutionary events in the history of diamond cutting; the invention of the bruting machine which allowed diamonds to be cut in the round, and the discovery of the South African deposits. Diamonds were more plentiful than ever before and could be cut with symmetry and precision that was not previously possible.
The central diamond is flanked by two further round old-cut diamonds, to another pair of diamonds at each end - all have been carefully graduated in size to offer a flattering and harmonious balance of stones across the finger. Each diamond was cut by-hand well over a hundred years ago, as such they have the charming character and sparkles that antique diamonds are known and loved for.
The five diamonds are all claw-set and interspersed by small rose-cut diamonds which add a soft and romantic finesse to an already perfect piece! The gallery of the ring is sublime. Masterfully carved into rich 18ct yellow gold, the gallery is formed by scrolling motifs and stylised acanthus leafs.
The two outermost diamonds lead to the shoulders of the ring, which features fluting detail, leading to a solid D-shape shank. This ring is an absolute dream of a ring and would make for the perfect engagement ring - as classy and elegant today as it was two centuries ago when it was first made.
The inside of the band features an inscription, hand engraved in italic script, 'December 15 1898', followed by the initials 'J. R. L.' - a sweet and sentimental nod to the love that this ring has previously symbolised.
