Provenance
Original to c.1925 this is a particularly refined example of Art Deco craftsmanship. Set to centre with a round old-cut diamond, grains set in an octagonal bezel with polished edges. Further set with two smaller round old-cut diamonds set above and below the central stone, in rub-over settings finished with millegrain edge detail. A bombe cluster design featuring exquisite filigree work; executed in platinum, millegrain details throughout, scrolling foliate motifs and geometric openwork.
The shoulders are each set with a blue sapphire, a combined approximate weight of 0.06ct. Grain set in an stylised floral motif, reminiscent of Art Nouveau ceramic tiles. Surrounded by refined open-work, millegrain edging throughout. The gallery is low and conforming to the finger, decorated with tiny chenier details. The shoulders then elegantly taper and are engraved with a laurel leaf pattern, leading to a solid platinum band.
This ring is beautifully made, with every detail thoughtfully rendered to create a piece that is as enjoyable to admire as it is to wear. The ability to achieve such intricate design owes much to platinum. Introduced to jewellery in 1901 following the invention of the blue torch, platinum became malleable enough to be expertly worked by skilled hands. Stronger and brighter than silver and far more resistant to tarnish, platinum quickly became the metal of choice. While it features prominently in Edwardian jewellery, by the 1920s jewellers had truly mastered its potential.
There is something undeniably glamorous about this ring. It feels as though it belongs to an evening filled with fun (and champagne!). What I love the most about this ring is that it perfectly encapsulates the Roaring Twenties, an era defined by elegance, confidence and a touch of indulgence!
