Provenance

Original to c.1925, this pink topaz and diamond cocktail ring has our jaws on the floor. Set to centre with a natural pink topaz of outstanding quality. It displays a silky orchid- pink colour with soft violet and blush undertones that shimmer delicately at the edges. This topaz has exceptional clarity that feels almost liquid and the stone remains in remarkable condition, with crisp facet edges and unblemished surfaces.

Topaz comes in a vast range of colours, but among the most highly sought after is pink Imperial topaz which was found in Brazil during the 18th century. The term originates from 19th century Russia, where pink topaz was highly prized by Tsars. Topaz is renowned for its high clarity and exceptional durability, ranking an eight on the Mohs hardness scale. Claw-set in an open-back setting; the collet has been thoughtfully designed to match the size of the topaz's table facet, a detail which enhances the stones clarity even further.

Flanked by architectural shoulders which elegantly taper to conform to the finger. Each shoulder is set with four baguette-cut diamonds in platinum rub-over settings, eight in total. The baguette-cut was an innovation of the 1920s and required high quality diamonds of exceptional clarity. The baguette-cut has a unique sparkle known as the 'hall-of-mirrors' effect due to its parallel arrangement of linear facets. The clean lines and sleek symmetry of this diamond-cut resonated perfectly with the geometric ideals of the Art Deco period, and their arrangement here - set east-to-west and stacked upon one another, recalls the skyscrapers which were being built at the time. Each shoulder is surrounded by a stepped cluster design featuring round transition-cut diamonds - the last of the hand-cut stones. The baguette-cuts are in rub-over settings and the round in grain-settings bordered by polished edges.

The gallery is structured and architectural in style, however its low profile ensures the ring is still practical to be worn. Emerging alongside the exuberance of the Roaring Twenties, the cocktail ring became a symbol of a new age - of celebration, liberation and a whole lot of fun.
