Provenance

Original to c.1880, this Victorian five-stone ring is set with stunning cushion shape old-mine cut diamonds which provide a perfect spread across the finger. We love how elongated these diamonds are - true antique elongated cushion diamonds are hard to come by, to have five here is incredible.

The old-mine cut is one of the earliest diamond cuts. These stones were sourced from the historic mines of India or Brazil (the first two known deposits). They are characterised by their deep proportions, broad irregular facets, large cullet and charming cushion outline. Entirely cut by hand under daylight or candlelight, no two old-mine diamonds are identical - each has its own distinct character and charming sparkle.

The five diamonds here have been cut with very pleasing proportions. They have a slightly more elongated outline than most, appearing almost oval, which is very rarely seen in antique hand-cut diamonds. The central diamond is very subtly larger than the rest and the diamonds flanking it graduate in size, giving the ring a balanced and elegant look. However, each diamond is completely unique, they differ in colour, shape and cut. I love that one of the diamonds flanking the central stone is notably tinted yellow compared to the whiter stones it sits with.

The diamonds are all claw-set in silver and the band is 18ct yellow gold. Unlike modern jewellery which tends to have a high profile and bulky claws which have a tendency to get snagged on things, antique pieces such as this one were made with far more care and deliberation. The profile of this ring is nice and low and the claws elegantly curve to ensure comfortable and practical wear. The gallery is intricately pierced and the shoulders are carved with scrolling motifs which meet at a ridge flowing into a solid 18ct yellow gold band.

My favourite thing about this ring is just how authentically antique it is; its far from perfect and this is what makes it so special!
