Provenance
Original to c.1880, this French made agate cameo ring depicts the Roman god Jupiter and goddess Juno. The mythological deities are depicted in profile overlapping one another and have been carved with the utmost precision. The stone’s contrasting layers of smokey grey, white and a rich jasper red bring depth to the flowing curls, carefully worked beard and softly folded drapery, while a simple gold surround allows the carving to take centre stage.
Rub-over set with a ridge detail encircling, to a solid gallery which is very finely engraved with a foliate design featuring lavish scrollwork, it acts almost as an ornate gilded frame and it is a very fine detail of the piece. The shoulders are further engraved with the scrolling design and very gently taper to a solid 18ct yellow gold band.
Jupiter, king of the Roman gods, embodies sovereignty and authority, while his wife Juno was revered as the protector of marriage and marital faithfulness. Their paired portraits bring together themes of power and partnership, lending this miniature sculpture a particularly fitting significance as a ring: a jewel with meaning as well as beauty.
The reverse of the cameo has been hand engraved with the words 'Jupiter et Junon', French for Jupiter and Juno, identifying the two figures portrayed on the other side. This ring is an exceptional example of the nineteenth-century revival of gem carving - an art treasured since antiquity.
