Provenance
Original to c.1910, this Edwardian sapphire and diamond cluster ring is like no other and it is absolutely gorgeous. It has a highly unusual panel shape but with such rounded corners that it seems to be its own shape all together - something in between an oval and an elongated cushion!
Set to centre with a natural, unheated blue sapphire with an incredible hue. It reminds me of watching a clear summers night sky getting progressively darker once the sun has gone down. It has a subtle luminosity, almost a liquid-like quality which can be enjoyed endlessly when turned under light.
The sapphire has a very pleasing cushion-cut and is secured in a rub-over setting. Surrounded by a double cluster of cushion shape old mine-cut diamonds. Entirely cut by hand under daylight or gas-lamp each diamond has its own individual proportions and character which is what gives them the soft, romantic glow for which old mine cut diamonds are so widely loved.
The diamonds are graduated in size, a subtle but very refined detail, grain-set and surrounded by a polished edge. The gallery is low in profile making the ring extraordinarily comfortable to wear and is pierced with a very sophisticated open-work linear design. The collet is exquisite! Its been daintily hand-engraved with tiny scrolling motifs - a personal and intimate detail to be enjoyed by the wearer and the wearer alone.
The shoulders are further set with old mine-cut diamonds and slope outwards to meet the solid 18ct yellow gold D-shape shank. This ring is the definition of elegance and old-world charm.
