Provenance
Original to c.1888, this Victorian sapphire solitaire ring is unbelievably chic. Despite being made well over 100 years ago, there is something that feels contemporary about this ring that makes it effortlessly wearable. Chunky solitaire rings such as this one, are a type of gypsy ring and were popular during the late Victorian period and into the Edwardian era.
The sapphire has a smoky yet serene cornflower-blue hue which has notable violet undertones. Weighing 3.50ct and cut as an elongated cushion, the proportions of this stone are perfect, giving it depth and character. The sapphires clarity is remarkable given its size. It hails from the historic Ceylon mines (modern day Sri Lanka), the locality for the world's finest cornflower blue sapphires such as this one.
In classic gypsy style, the sapphire is held in a rub-over setting with an open-back to allow light to pass through the stone. The setting is raised and the gallery solid gold, to tapered shoulders which slope to form the solid D-shape shank. The ring bears hallmarks tracing it to London, c.1888 - it is uncommon to know the precise origin of an antique ring, making this discovery particularly special!
