To find out more about the gemstones in this ring:
Provenance
A vintage 1940s cocktail ring set with six baguette-cut diamonds in a chunky solid platinum ring. The baguette-cut diamonds have each been carefully set to sit in perfect tension with one another, with no metal needed to support the stones in between. This setting style is called channel-setting and was an innovation of the 1930s. The diamonds here are also graduated in size, making the channel-setting process all the more challenging - a true master craftsman would have made this ring.
The diamonds, perfectly matched in colour and clarity sit in flush with a central raised ridge which conforms to the finger and flows into the shank. Chunky cocktail rings such as this one are sometimes referred to as tank-rings, a style which became popular during the 1940s inspired by the tanks used during WWII. These rings are characterised by bold, brutalist-looking forms with a structured, architectural like quality.
