Provenance
Made in France during the 1960s, this vintage diamond cocktail ring is exceptional.
Big, bold and unapologetically glamorous, this ring encapsulates mid-century jewellery design and would have been the height of fashion when it was first made. Set to centre with a round old-cut diamond, claw-set in a subtly raised illusion setting.
Surrounded by a sunburst-style cluster, very refined fluted gold-work that subtly gives the effect of a ballerina-ring. Surrounded by eight trefoil clusters of modern round brilliant-cut diamonds, claw-set within open arches. The sweeping, abstract arrangement of the diamonds creates a wonderful sense of movement, while the substantial gold mount gives the ring remarkable presence on the finger.
The gallery is closed, solid gold and double tiered with engraved ridge detail, to an impressive bombé shaped cocktail ring. Broad, trumpeting shoulders that are solid, embellished with relief detail. Comfortably conforming to the finger and tapering to a flattened D-shape shank which bears French hallmarks.
During the 1960s, the cocktail ring reached its apogee, becoming larger, bolder and more expressive than ever before. Strikingly similar rings were produced by Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier, and the remarkable technical mastery displayed here suggests the ring was crafted by a jeweller trained to the exacting standards of one of Europe's great Maisons.
