Provenance
Original to c.1870, this Victorian sapphire five-stone ring is without doubt the finest we’ve ever seen. This style of ring, known as the carved half-hoop, became hugely popular towards the end of the 19th century and is characterised by five gemstones set side by side above an ornately carved gallery. Due to their number of gemstones, most of these rings were broken up during the following century to be re-set into newer jewels.
That this ring has survived in its original state is incredible. Set with five natural sapphires, cushion cut and graduated in size - all five stones have been perfectly matched in colour which is no easy feat, especially for stones with such a rich and intense royal-blue colour.
The sapphires are all claw-set in open-back settings and interspersed with tiny rose-cut diamonds. The gallery features gold scrollwork, low in profile making the ring perfectly comfortable to wear everyday. The shoulders are carved with further scrolling motifs and engraved with a ridge that flows to the solid 18ct yellow gold band.
