To find out more about the gemstones in this ring:

Provenance

Original to c.1805, this Georgian era ring is a truly rare example of early 19th century craftsmanship. Set to centre with an octagonal-cut unheated sapphire with the most delicate wisteria-like hue. The sapphire hails from the historic mines of Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka), which is the source of the world's finest sapphires.

Mounted in a closed-back foiled setting this ring is a quintessential example of Georgian craftsmanship. Foiling - a technique widely used from the early 18th to the mid-19th century - involved placing coloured metallic foil beneath a gemstone before sealing it within a closed-back setting. The foil would influence the colour and appearance of the gem to accentuate its colour and give it a brighter luminosity.

At a time when gemstones were considerably rarer and less accessible than they would become in the Victorian era, this ingenious technique also allowed for colours and visual effects that might otherwise have been impossible.

The sapphire is held by a gold cut-down setting with refined decorative detailing.Flanked on either side by two diamonds in closed-back, cut-down settings in silver. Incredibly, these are Peruzzi-cut diamonds! The Peruzzi cut is an incredibly rare early diamond cut that originated from 16th century Venice. Peruzzi diamonds are almost exclusively from the old mines of India, famed for its historical Golconda diamond mines. Peruzzi diamonds are characterised by their distinctive square outline, deep proportions and irregular, rather rudimentary facets. Original Peruzzi diamonds are among the rarest so to have not just one, but two here, is extraordinary.

Georgian jewellery is relatively scarce compared Victorian and Edwardian pieces. This is due to the fact jewellery was reserved exclusively for the upper echelons of society, and over the centuries many surviving jewels were dismantled and re-made into more contemporary designs.

Owing to its age and closed-back setting, this ring requires a little more care than modern jewellery. This is a truly remarkable ring - utterly one of a kind. Its rich, solid gold presence evokes the boldness of a traditional gypsy ring, yet it retains the ethereal romance and air of femininity that only genuine Georgian jewellery can possess.
