Provenance
Original to c.1915, this exceptional Burmese ruby and old-mine cut diamond three-stone ring is a very refined example of late-Edwardian craftsmanship. Set to centre with an incredible natural, unheated Burmese ruby with a rich red hue. This stone actually hails from the historic Mogok mines, which are famed for producing the most valuable rubies in the world. Flashes of bright crimson red dance within the stone as its turned under light, bringing the stone to life. In an open-back claw setting with fine split-prong detail, flanked by two cushion-shape old-mine cut diamonds also in open-back claw settings.
The diamonds are absolutely stunning; the term old-mine is used to describe diamonds which were cut before the discovery of the South African diamond deposits. These diamonds will have come from either India or Brazil and are characterised by their cushion-shaped outline, deep proportions and chunky facets giving these diamonds a soft and romantic glow as opposed to the harsher twinkling of modern-cut stones.
The ruby and diamonds are set above a decorative platinum gallery with scalloped detail and low-profile linear openwork. The shoulders are filled and gently taper to a solid 18ct yellow gold shank. Typical of Edwardian style, this ring is very elegantly proportioned and expertly crafted to be delicate and light in appearance, yet reassuringly durable for everyday love and wear.
