Emerald and diamond ring, 18thcentury.
This charming ring is designed as an open work flower, set with rose-cut diamonds silver and step-cut emeralds in gold, in closed back settings. Rose-cut diamonds are diamonds which are flat at the reverse, and cut with a pattern of triangular facets at the front. The rose cut is among the earlier diamond cuts developed, and was primarily associated with the diamond cutting centres of Amsterdam and Antwerp. The diamonds and emeralds in this piece are set in foiled, closed-back settings, which help reflect light through the stone – the preferred method of setting stones until open-backed settings were developed in the early 1700s. This beautiful ring is also highly wearable and comfortable, and sits very well against contemporary jewels.
