Amethyst and diamond ring, early 20th century. The strikingly deep shade of the cabochon at the centre of this ring is reminiscent of the finest amethysts, traditionally mined in Siberia. Before larger deposits were discovered in Brazil, amethyst was one of the rarest, most expensive and prestigious stones, and even now, examples in this truly deep violet hue remain extremely scarce. Despite an obvious association with wine due to its colour, amethyst actually derives its name from an ancient Greek work meaning ‘not drunk’ and was thought to protect the wearer against intoxication from alcohol. This ring balances yellow gold (the ideal complement to amethyst) with a floral border of platinum millegrain-set with circular-cut and single-cut diamonds, flawlessly mixing delicate and bold elements to create a unique and extremely attractive jewel.
