Carnelian intaglio ring, 18th century. This elegant ring is set with a carnelian cabochon, beautifully carved with a Roman emperor wearing a laurel crown. Cameos and intaglios are an art form that dates back thousands of years to the Ancient Greeks, where carved gems were important symbols of power, wealth and prestige, and sometimes imbued with talismanic properties. This stylish ring (perfect for a pinky!) dates to the late 18th century, when Napoleon and his wife Empress Josephine brought this venerable art form back into fashion, sparking a craze for them across Europe. In its beautiful original collet setting, this ring is a rare survival – classical and timelessly stylish.
