The sapphires in this deceptively simple ring have been specially cut for the setting (calibré-cut), so that they tessellate together to form a radiating oval shape, an extremely labour intensive and time-consuming technique which emerged as stone cutting techniques became increasingly advanced in the early 20\u003csup\u003eth \u003c\/sup\u003ecentury in order to meet the demands of the abstract geometric designs of the Art Deco period.
